I looked upon the neon shores
From a ship in the night sailing
The nightlights split the evening sky
Like the stars brightly shining
And their reflection in the water
Like wrinkles on a sheet of glass
When the ship was slowly docking
I saw the roads and the boardwalks
And the lights of street lamps there
Glowing on faces waiting
And the people running to and fro
As if they had someplace to go
I found my car and jumped inside
Driving through the streets I could not see
The shining that I saw before
The glow was now faces frowning
Of panhandlers there on the street
Trying to find something to eat
Children of the night wandering
As if they had no place to go
Standing beneath the street lamps there
Are the ones we just threw away
Trying to make their tired bodies pay
To buy the rock they need today
My car is speeding out of town
Into a night without street lights
As I look in my review mirror
I see the star lights retuning
And my mind starts settling down
Looking back at the neon night
